lj just ate my comment for 2nd time!!! gah
anyway, was just saying i'm slightly envious. i've never actually touched snow. the closest i've come is a dirty, icey puddle on top of a mountain of 3-day old snow. hmm. i'm sure the novelty wears off though huh.
well you stay warm - look on the bright side, drinking alcohol to stay warm is a good excuse for a drink if ever there was one ;)

Actually, alcohol relaxes the little muscles around the arterioles supplying the capillaries in the skin, increasing the flow of blood to the skin and thus warming the heat sensors there but actually increasing the rate of heat loss from the body core (with no heat sensors) via the skin to the outside world.

Sitting near the open fire similarly warms the surface of the skin and increases heat loss more than it actually warms you. The best way to warm someone up is to get them into a bath at 37°C. If they're conscious, you put them in up to the neck. By the time someone loses consciousness from cold, the cores of their limbs have cooled down too and blood flow to there has been reduced, keeping the heat in the vital organs of the torso, and immersion of the limbs in warm water would allow the bloodflow to the cold limb cores to increase and take that precious heat away from the core, so instead you keep their arms and legs out and just lower the body in, cradling the head at the surface.

Meanwhile, here are pictures of snow in large amounts!

why thanks. uh yes... most informative ;)
so i guess you actually shouldnt give brandy or whisky to someone who's just fallen in an icey river then?! heh

it still seems an alien concept to me, that frozen water falls and just sits on the ground like that. weird. like people who've never seen the ocean in person - must be difficult to imagine

True. But having to venture into the snow to get the beer isn't much fun
